Bad Design by Anonymous, 29 November 2012, 52 out of 55 people found this review helpful Over the years I have owned and ridden a number of Tacx products and in general not been disappointed. So when it came to buying a set of rollers a couple of years back, I opted for TACX again, and chose the Antares, being relatively cheap, light and easily stored. Now, looking back on it, and reading other reviews around the web, I think it was a mistake. The problems I have found are – 1.) the “sliding” design of the frame, using two plastic “clips” to hold the frame in-place through friction, means that as you ride the frame slides together shortening the wheelbase of the rollers – this changes the response of teh bike on teh rollers and is less than ideal. (This can be fixed by drilling the frame of the rollers and slotting in a peg (I used a screw) to hold the frame in the required position – not pretty but it does the job) 2.) Within a few months of use, the rollers develop a loud vibrational noise. I assumed this was due to frame or roller warp as if I rode the rollers, keeping my bike on one side or the other, this noise could be almost eliminated… I spent a very long time trying to wedge the rollers flat using wood, or folded cardboard, and also tried laying the rollers on foam and carpet to dampen the noise, all with minmal success. Then I discovered (via Google) that this noise is a known issue with the TACX Antares and caused by another design flaw. The roller bearings are a push fit in to the ends of eack plastic roller on both sides. With the friction/power from the wheels the housing starts to wear and the bearings no longer sit nicely in their plastic housing. With just the tiniest amount of movement, between bearing and roller, a vibrational noise occurs. This noise can get very very loud and annoying to the point that the rollers are almost unuseable (especially if anyone else is around!) The solution is either replace the roller (too expensive!)… or take out each bearing and “glue” it back in to place and hope the glue holds up… I have used Loctite (as advised on other cycle forums) with a varying degree of success. It does work, but is not a bullet proof solution. It seems to hold temporarily… may be for a few weeks at a time. Because, over the years, I have ridden quite a number of sets of rollers and this is the first I have had any real on-going problem(s) with… I would not recommend them. When they work, without the noise, the TACX Antares are smooth and excellent for spinning… but I do believe there are better designed, better made sets of rollers out there.
Good set of rollers for beginners by Broooce, 25 November 2013, 16 out of 18 people found this review helpful This is my first set of rollers to escape the fading light of winter. I am a beginner and found it easy enough to set up and start using. Far better, in my opinion, than a turbo trainer: far more involvement in the cycle, you don’t get to switch off your brain, you must stay focused or suffer the consequences! There are options available for buying a clamp to lock your front wheel in if you fancy a more turbo trainer work out. If I was buying again I would consider the slightly dearer version that allowed for more forward/back motion…allowing you to stand up cycling on rollers. Also, invest in a rear tyre fit for purpose…road tyres heat up too much and deflate tubes quickly. Enjoy it!! Pros: light easily stored good price robust Cons: unable to stand up cycle on it
