Top reviews:
Fantastic shifting, fantastic quality but seek out the right cables by SpannerJoe, 3 August 2015, 29 out of 29 people found this review helpful I’ve owned Shimano 105 5800 for at least a year now and can safely say that it is vastly better than the previous version. The action of the shifters is light and crisp. Braking is controlled and responsive and the hoods are comfortable, though my fingers can rub on the backs of the levers sometimes. I guess this comes down to riding style and hand shape. I’ve just bought a further pair of these to use with a mainly-Ultegra build and they work perfectly. I’ve also fitted these to dozens of bikes for customers and have set them up on new bikes from manufacturers – I’m a mechanic. The reason I’ve only given 4 stars isn’t because there’s anything wrong with the shifters, but rather it’s an issue of value. Don’t get me wrong – compared with Sram or Campag, I personally think that these look, feel and work far better and are ridiculously cheap in comparison. But to get the best from them you should really use Shimano’s new Polymer coated cables, and these are expensive! Buy the gear cables as a kit and you’ll pay å£23 upwards. Individually, the cables cost å£16 each or å£10 for the brake cables. So maintenance costs could be high if you ride in all conditions. The other problem is that CRC don’t supply Polymer brake cables when you order these levers, nor do they supply the correct silicone-nosed ferrules, which is both a shame and a bit cheap. I’ve taken delivery of groupsets from other online retailers and they all included full Polymer cables and the correct ferrules (end caps). Pity. Pros: comfort quality function price Cons: expensive cables hoods won’t suit everyone retailers that don’t supply the right cables
Unbeatable! by Jt777, 9 June 2015, 2 out of 2 people found this review helpful Does everything as well as the Ultega. Functionality wise it is identical to the Ulterga but a few and only a few grams heavier. For me, it is not worth spending the extra on Ultegra.
