Bomb proof, maintainable, bottom bracket. In short you get what you pay for! by Farqus, 3 November 2013, 12 out of 13 people found this review helpful Hope are the business (and I’m not employed by them :0) )…… I have a ‘collection’ of Orange bikes (P7; 5 etc), British bikes used in British conditions (I ride every weekend and during the week when work permits) and I could never understand why a British bearing is never used as standard on these bikes. It is an option, but when riding in all sorts of conditions, the supplied Race Face etc bearings just can’t cope. I went through a set of supplied Race Face BB in 4 months on my first bike and replaced them with the SS Hope….. and had fantastic, trouble free, use ever since ( and that’s pushing 4 years now). I’ve upgraded all my bikes to Hope bearings now. Easy to maintain, I do it every 6 months, strip an lube takes, easily, under an hour from start to finish …. And you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to do it, just use the correct BB tool (the chain reaction one is great) . It can look like a large outlay for a replacement, but it will save you in the long run ( so the con isn’t really a con)….. As I said, you get what you pay for…. The best accolade for these bearings is that you never notice them. They just just go on, and on……. And on Pros: easy to fit easy to maintain Cons: can seem expensive for ‘just a replacement’
Never again by Apple88, 29 December 2016, 11 out of 12 people found this review helpful After reading many good reviews on this BB, I was convinced it was a bullet proof blingy BB I could put on my bike which would last a relatively long time following my usual maintenance regime. Having bought one and used it for a few months, I have been able to see for myself just how good this BB is The Good – The orange anodise finish is rich and hard wearing. – General build quality is excellent – very nicely finished parts on the BB itself – Smooth running ( aren’t all BBs ) The Bad – My BB developed play in the drive side bearing after a few months. As a rider weighing ~ 163lbs who rides a slick ti MTB at high cadence around town (flat) and whom maintains his bike religiously, this failure was totally unexpected. – The steel bearings being steel will leave shiny rings on your crank spindles where they sit and spin even if you grease generously and clean regularly. This indicates wear which with prolonged use could result in play. This BB marked my brand new XTR cranks spindles after a few weeks – The plastic seals are easy to remove and clean but dust and grit can also easily enter in and around them after a couple of rides forcing you to clean them religiously. If you donÛªt clean them, you will hear grinding noises when you turn your cranks. If you ride in the wet, the issue is worse. After dusty rides, I always have to clean it. – Due to the design of the BB, itÛªs seal and bearings, you will need to install it following the manufacturers strict instructions. If you deviate and over-tighten, youÛªll likely see premature failure of bearings. – Spacers are very poorly finished to the extent I swapped them for Shimano spacers. Having used XTR BBs for years on my bikes, I thought a Hope BB would be a nice change purely for bling factor on one of my ti builds. However, the issues I came across forced me to revert back to trusted BB SM93. The real show-stopper for me was the wear on the crank spindles. I would much rather go through many cheaper Shimano BBs but have my cranks in top shape than use what some claim to be a better BB which actually damages wears the spindle slowly because itÛªs steel and has poor flimsy seals. Hope makes some great stuff which I currently run including wheelsets, pedals and brakes but these BBÛªs fall far short. Expensive and abrasive yet delicate.
