Game changing whels at a silly low price by RamjetOrgainism, 26 January 2015, 10 out of 10 people found this review helpful By my wife’s kitchen scales, wheels with no rim tape or valves: Front 700g, Rear 860g so 1560g total. Fine by me Rear wheel perfectly true. Front wheel very slightly out with a minor kink around the valve hole. Rear wheel has no dishing and the spoke bed is very narrow. An offset rim may have been a better bet?? Front lacing is very broad and should be very strong. Spokes are taught and even. Cassette rotor is definitely 8/9/10 speed and the ‘washer’ mentioned in the blurb is non-existent. Packaging from CRC was excellent, as was the free delivery. Included are 2 x UST valves, 2 x RWS skewers and 2 x rim tape, for use with tubes. The Skewers are jewelry, and cost about å£50 to buy separately. Hubs are sublime ÛÒ I have never experienced such smooth bearings. On the bike, in the stand, they just keep spinning, then alternate direction until the valve’s settles pointing vertically down. Impressive. Rims feel ‘tinny’ and the wear indicators on the brake track are very shallow. A good job that all my road riding occurs in the dry. First ride yesterday was a 9km blast ÛÒ 100m altitude gain into a 20km wind, then turn round and blast all the sweeping corners at full speed back home. I life in rural Catalunya (Spain), have perfect roads with marginal traffic and stunning scenery. The first impression with these wheels is the bizarre comfort ÛÒ road buzz is pretty much completely removed. Low spoke count? Plastic rim inserts? I don’t know but it’s unnerving initially as there is a feeling of being disassociated from the tarmac. Long days in the saddle are going to be so much more fun! Next is the effortlessness and quietness of the acceleration. It doesn’t ‘feel’ quick but you’re suddenly really shifting. That doesn’t stop. It can’t be the lightness of the wheels that makes them so quick ÛÒ that doesn’t make physical sense, but something about the bearings / lacing / aerodynamics that makes these wheels so quick. In my quick 9 km blast (into a strong wind) I was 5km/hr quicker than I was on my old wheel / tyre combo. I know it’s not the tyre swap as the Hutchinson Atoms I’m running have been used with my old wheels and they were slower than the stock tyres. I’m no racer. I bought these wheels so that I would enjoy my riding more and spur me on to get out more. I’m up early and raring to get out again today and do a ‘proper’ ride these wheels are so good. My bike in an inexpensive B’Twin Triban 5. The stock wheels can be bought for about å£60 so I am really comparing the worst with some of the best money can buy. I bought the Tricons when CRC were selling them at å£200. The hubs and skewers would have cost more than that to buy separately. Now at å£360, it’s not the uber bargain is was. If you save these for good conditions / races then they’re probably still a bargain. If you’re heavy and plan to commute with them, look elsewhere. I am 85kg and the stated max rider weight is 90kg. The ‘1455’ appears to be a bit of a misnomer as the hubs have ‘1450’ decals stuck to them.
Good wheels – hub wore out in 6 months by ChrisNicholls1, 13 November 2015, 3 out of 3 people found this review helpful I have been very happy with the performance of these wheels, they’re lightweight, responsive, look good and are a bargain price. I have been disappointed after 6 months of use that the unsealed hub bearings have completely worn out and require a new hub. The hub spider has also been irreparably damaged by the cassette so that is 2 design faults on the same item which is disappointing. I have spent å£50 on a new hub which I’m hoping will be more durable. Pros: light responsive Cons: wear out fast unsealed hub bearings
