Top reviews:
Well designed product, good quality. by Poweredbypasties, 2 October 2016, 12 out of 12 people found this review helpful I’ve had a few Garmin products over the years. Namely the 500, 800, 1000 and now the 820 (plus a couple of watches). The device I used before the 820 was the 1000. Actually I had 2 Garmin edge 1000’s, the first broke during a wet ride (I live in Manchester), the second sustained water damage from water sitting in the up mounted lap/start switches. I think. When the second device broke (out of warranty) I flirted with moving away from Garmin given my experience with the 1000 but after seeing the great deal on chain reaction I decided to give the 820 a go. It’s basically a Garmin 1000 in the body of a 510. This is good. It looks compact, less like a smartphone mounted on your handlebars, more like a pro power meter. The minimal buttons are well protected, and far less likely to succumb to damage as my 1000 did. Set up is easy, and it syncs well with a smartphone and computer using either cable or bluetooth/wireless. There are functions a plenty, from simple cadence, heart rate, speed and GPS to the more advanced power meter and ‘radar’ when linked with my newly acquired aria light. I’m assuming Garmin will at some point find away to remove me from the bike completely. The courses functions are good and the interface is new compared to the 1000. Simplified, with focus on how you are preparing to ride, courses/navigation or training/turbo etc. I don’t have a turbo trainer that can interface with the unit but have heard good things. The new function of power save is welcome, where the device essentially turns off it’s display and runs in the background to eek out as much of it’s remaining life (and ensure your can upload your ride to starva). In summary what you get is a pretty near future proof, well designed and compact bit of kit. The sat nav side of things is still a bit clunky, especially from a company that originated in this field. It still can get me home when needed, just occasionally via the odd unpaved and unwelcome road! Otherwise it appears to pretty seamlessly link with my various speed, cadence, heart rate. phone, lights, radar and cpu with minimal effort. Still unsure why they’ve named it 820 though? Pros: good battery life loads of functions compact Cons: sat nav might take you off road! expensive
Best Yet by SNW53, 11 September 2016, 2 out of 2 people found this review helpful I think that I may have 5 Garmin cycle computers. I got this one as I needed better mapping than on the 520 that I use by default. It is the best yet. Mapping is good and interface is intuitive. The screen is very easy to read (stem mounted). The pictures that are used in the publicity tend to use the graphics for pedal monitoring and I don’t have Garmin pedals so I don’t use that or the group ride facility. Connects to my Campagnolo EPS. At the end of a ride it keeps telling me that my FTP is significantly higher than Training Peaks says it is – so I need to investigate that when I have a moment.
