Excellent for steep climbs – eliminates the dead spot by Birchtj, 23 February 2015, 4 out of 4 people found this review helpful These are really good for mountain biking up steep slopes. The oval shape helps to reduce the dead spot that you hit at the top / bottom of your pedal stroke by changing the shape of the chainring at this place. Effectively “speeding up” during the dead spot and “slowing down” during the power zone. There are 3 adjustment settings to slightly adjust for individual riders, but I found the standard (middle) setting to be right. Almost immediately you can tell the difference in your uphill climbs, with a noticeable improvement in power. I got the 2 pack and swapped both of my front chain rings, awesome upgrade to any mountain biker as this really does make a huge difference to your ability to climb. Now the downside The chainrings are made of aluminum and don’t really last that long. My first set lasted about a year before I started to get chain suck on hard climbs. This is obviously the worst time to get chain suck and I broke a couple of chains as a result. Obvious “hooks” had developed on the individual teeth which were not releasing the chain as easily as a new chain ring. No amount of lubrication helped. Tried to file the hooks out, but didn’t really help much as you’re effectively stretching the chain further as a result. I’ve just ordered a Bionicon c.guide eco, which should help with the chain suck. However, I did find that I could use the larger chain ring and a bigger back gear and still make it up the slope. Don’t expect these these to last much longer than a year. The smaller chainring will need to be replaced much earlier than the bigger one. So happiness that CRC is selling them separately. If these were titanium they would be awesome (albeit more expensive) Overall, worth the $$ as it’s probably the best upgrade I’ve ever made to my bike. Pros: awesome climbing ability power even on big chainring best upgrade for a mountain bike Cons: made from aluminum chain suck when worn only lasts about a year

CRC should also sell the spider as the package for XX1 or other crankset. It was very difficult to buy from another online shop just the spider alone. I would recommend this product! Pros: light weight compatibility with xx1 Cons: expensive spider is required
