Great Gear range For Lake District by FirstRiderOff, 15 December 2017, 3 out of 3 people found this review helpful I got this for a great price from Chainreaction Cycles to upgrade the 1 X 11 on my Whyte T129 as I struggled at times on the very steep technical climbs here in the lakes and because I am in my early 60’s! I did have a couple of issues. Firstly I was replacing a “Direct Mount” Shimano XT rear derailleur. What I hadn’t realised is that with the direct mount an offset derailleur hanger is used, so it was impossible to get the Sram Eagle GX set up correctly. Luckily an Sram Eagle equipped version of my bike is sold, so I obtained a “straight” derailleur hanger which allowed me to fit the Eagle rear derailleur and set it up correctly. Also the fit off the Sram GX shifter is less than ideal when used with Shimano XT brake levers. To get the shifter inboard of the brake lever and having it hard up against the lever means it will only fit in one position as the clamping arrangements interfere with each other. I had to shorten the clamp bolt on the brake lever to prevent it digging in to the shifter body when tightened.This does limit your options for the relative positions of your brake lever and shifter. I was concerned about the extreme chain-line especially on the largest (massive) ring on the cassette (which itself is a lovely piece of engineering). There was absolutely no way I could improve this without having issues elsewhere. Anyway even with the chain-line as is the gears operated superbly and quietly, so much so I had to check sometimes whether it was changing! Time will tell whether the chain-line extremes cause any wear problems or other issues.The range on the Eagle 10T to 50T cassette is huge and I no longer spin out on fast downhills and I can now make the hills with relative ease. Superb! Pros: superb range of gears slick gear changes fantastic price quality Cons: compatibility with shimano could be better.
